Boot Loader

  • For GRUB, add the following two lines to /boot/grub/grub.conf and comment out "splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz"

    serial - -unit=0 --speed=19200--
    word=8 -- parity=no --stop=1

    terminal --timeout=10 serial console

#splashimage =(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz

In the example above, console output is redirected to COM1, the boot entry is specified as 1 and the port speed is set to 19200. Change the values if needed to match your set up.

  • Add "serial console=ttyS0,19200n8"
    to the end of kernel/vmlinuz in

    (Port speed in this set up is 19200,
    change the value if needed, to match
    your set up)

    Ex: kernel/vmlinuz-2.6.5-1.358smp ro
    root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet serial
    console=ttyS0, 19200n8

This will result in all boot messages being output to console ttyS0 thereby eliminating boot messages on the local console until the login prompt.
